Cumilla Region (Districts: Brahmanbaria, Chandpur and Cumilla)







According to the flood forecasting and warning center of Bangladesh Water Development Board, the water level of major rivers in the north-eastern, eastern and south-eastern regions of the country is decreasing. The following suggestions are given to protect Aman paddy and other crops from the harmful effects of floods during the post-flood period:



    
	
  • In all flood affected areas BRRI developed light sensitive Ufshi varieties like BR5, BR22, BR23, BRRI Dhan34, BRRI Dhan41, BRRI Dhan46, BRRI Dhan54 and light sensitive local varieties like Nigershail, Rajashail, Kajalshail direct sowing till 7th September and should be planted by September 15.
    • 




    
	
  • After receding flood water, short life varieties of BRRI and BINA introduced like BRRI Dhan33, BRRI Dhan57, BRRI Dhan62, BRRI Dhan71, BRRI Dhan75, BINA Dhan-7 and BINA Dhan-17 under direct sowing till August 25 in Noakhali, Feni, Lakshmipur only and can be cultivated in flood affected areas of greater Chittagong regions. It should be noted that in flood affected Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur and other parts of the country, the dream life variety cannot be cultivated at the moment.
    • 
	
  • In all those areas where there is no elevated land for sowing seeds, steps should be taken to create seedlings in floating or covered seedbeds or trays.
    • 
	
  • If there is mud or silt on the leaves of paddy plants that are alive after being submerged in flood water, the leaves should be washed by spraying clean water after 7 days after the flood water recedes.
    • 
	
  • Apply 7-8 kg urea and 5-6 kg potash fertilizer per bigha when new growing rice appear on rice plants after 8-10 days of flood water receding. Also, considering the growth stage of the plant, the approved amount of urea and potash fertilizers should be applied top as per requirement.
    • 
	
  • 2-3 growing rice paddy roots can be lifted from non-flooded growing Aman paddy plants (up to 30-40 days after planting) and it could be planted in flood-affected paddy fields.
    • 
	
  • In flood-free or flood-prone areas where older Aman paddy seedlings (60 days old maximum) are available, they should be planted at a distance of 20 x 15 cm at a density of 4-5 seedlings per cluster after the flood water recedes. Note that required TSP (10 kg per bigha) and MOP (14 kg per bigha) fertilizers should be applied at the time of final cultivation and 20-25 kg of urea fertilizer per bigha should be applied top 7-10 days after planting.
    • 
	
  • Flooding can later cause sheath blight and leaf blight in rice plants. Propiconazole/Nativo/Emister Top should be applied at the approved rate in the afternoon to control sheath blight disease along with balanced fertilizer use. Additional 5 kg of MOP fertilizer should be applied per bigha to control leaf blight.
    • 
	
  • Paddy fields may be affected by leaf-rolling and Brown Plant Hopper attack during post-flood season. In this case, regular field monitoring along with integrated pest control management should be followed before widespread infestation and appropriate pesticides should be applied.
    • 
	
  • Drain out excess water from paddy, vegetables and others standing crops.
    • 
	
  • Cultivate new vegetables after the water recedes from the flooded land.
    • 
	
  • If the banks of ponds or reservoirs are broken, repair them quickly or surround the broken parts with nets/weaves.
    • 
	
  • Catch any unwanted fish that enter the pond with the flood water.
    • 
	
  • Apply lime and salt to the pond as advised by the local fisheries office when the flood water recedes.
    • 
	
  • Post flood in flood affected areas, cattle and poultry may suffer from various diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease of cattle, anthrax, black quarter, rabies of poultry, PPR of goats and sheep etc. and infestation of parasites or worms. Therefore, as soon as the flood water recedes, make arrangements to give preventive vaccinations and deworming to cattle and poultry with the help and advice of Upazila Livestock Office and Veterinary Hospital.
